چکیده

The concept of attention has been used in many senses, often without clarifying how or why attention works as it does. Attention, like consciousness, is often described in a disembodied way. The present article summarizes neural models and supportive data about how attention is linked to processes of learning, expectation, competition, and consciousness. A key theme is that attention modulates cortical self-organization and stability. Perceptual and cognitive neocortex is organized into six main cell layers, with characteristic sub-lamina. Attention is part of a unified design of bottom-up, horizontal, and top-down interactions among identified cells in laminar cortical circuits. Neural models clarify how attention may allocated during processes of visual perception, learning and search; auditory streaming and speech perception; movement target selection during sensory-motor control; mental imagery and fantasy; and hallucinations during mental disorders, among other processes.

Models of Bottom-Up Attention and Saliency

Visually conspicuous, or so-called salient, stimuli often have the capability of attracting focal visual attention towards their locations. Several computational architectures subserving this bottom-up, stimulus-driven, spatiotemporal deployment of attention are reviewed in this article. The resulting computational models have applications not only to the prediction of visual search psychophysi...

Does Perceptual Learning Require Consciousness or Attention?

It has been proposed that visual attention and consciousness are separate [Koch, C., & Tsuchiya, N. Attention and consciousness: Two distinct brain processes. Trends in Cognitive Sciences, 11, 16-22, 2007] and possibly even orthogonal processes [Lamme, V. A. F. Why visual attention and awareness are different. Trends in Cognitive Sciences, 7, 12-18, 2003]. Attention and consciousness converge w...

Impact of Consciousness-raising Task and Structure-based Production Task on Learning Comparative and Superlative Forms by Iranian Elementary EFL Learners

This study aimed to investigate the relative effectiveness of consciousness-raising tasks and structure-based production tasks in comparison with the traditional teaching in learning comparative and superlative forms, following a task-based approach to teaching English grammar. To this end, from among 82 female elementary-level high school students having taken a Solutions Placement Test (2010)...

Language learning strategies, “the techniques or devices which a learner may use to acquire knowledge” (Rubin, 1975, p. 43) or more pertinently “complex, dynamic thoughts and actions, selected and used by learners with some degree of consciousness in specific contexts” (Oxford, 2017, p. 48), have been widely researched and discussed for more than forty years since the mid-1970s. Shifting the fo...
